Tarshis, Lauren

Lauren Tarshis is the author of the New York Times best-selling I Survived series, a collection of historical fiction books for young readers. Each book explores a history-shaping event through the eyes of a fictional child, combining deep research and fast-paced plots crafted to engage and inspire readers as they learn about history, science, and models of resilience.

With more than 60 million copies in print, the I Survived series includes chapter books, graphic novels, nonfiction collections, and has been translated into 12 languages. The newest chapter book, I Survived the Dust Bowl, 1935 will be published this October.

Lauren is also the author of the award-winning novel Emma-Jean Lazarus Fell Out of a Tree, its sequel, Emma-Jean Lazarus Fell in Love, and the picture book Only My Dog Knows. She also visits every place she writes about in the I Survived series — earthquake zones in Alaska, dust-bowl ghost-towns in the high plains, the ruins of Pompeii, battlefields in Brooklyn, Normandy, and Gettysburg. These trips are key for creating compelling, realistic stories that resonate with a wide range of readers.

In addition to her work as an author, Lauren has enjoyed a long career at Scholastic, Inc. as an editor and leader in the award-winning Magazines+ division. She currently serves as corporate Senior Vice President, Editor-at-Large. Her work enables her to travel extensively to connect with kids, parents, librarians, and educators from all over the United States and evangelize for the power of reading.
